More than a year after the initial breach, a museum is still unable to access its artefact database due to a cyber-attack. In 2021, Gloucester City Council caused significant delays to various services, including benefit payments, planning applications and house sales. The museum database had been used to organize a exhibitions at the venue. The council was made aware of the breach on December 20, 2021, and a recent report confirms that the museum is still affected. An email containing the malicious software was sent to a council officer, leading to the attack. Gloucester City Council has had to rebuild all of its servers following the incident, which has been attributed to Russian hackers. The cost of the attack is estimated to be nearing £1m, which will be paid by taxpayers.
